Pick where it lives
The three usual homes are paper, a general notes app, or a tool built for the craft. Each one wins somewhere, so be honest about how you actually work.
Paper is beautiful and slow, and writing by hand helps you remember. It cannot be searched, and moving a spell to a new page means rewriting it. A notes app is fast and searchable, but the structure is yours to invent and maintain, and it starts to feel like homework. A dedicated book of shadows app gives you the structure ready made; most keep your book private, which means nobody can learn from yours and you start from zero.
Whichever you pick, choose the one you will open on a tired weeknight. The best format is the one that gets written in.
Start with three sections
An empty book is heavy. Begin with three sections, not thirty:
- Correspondences. The herbs, stones, colors and moon phases you actually use, in one place.
- Practice log. One line per ritual or spell you try, and how it sat with you. This is the section that makes the book yours.
- Spells to try. A holding page for things you found and have not attempted yet, with a note on where each one came from.
Add a section only when a page refuses to fit the ones you have. Sections that grow from need stay alive; sections set up in advance go quiet.
Write entries you can find later
However you record an entry, keep four things with it: the date, the source, the intention in one sentence, and how it went if you tried it. Six months out, that is the difference between a book and a pile.
Rewrite borrowed material into your own words and credit where it came from. It is better craft, and later-you will understand it without the original tab.
Borrow honestly
Every witch borrows; the craft has always moved hand to hand. The honest version is simple: note who wrote it, change what does not fit your practice, and when someone asks, say where it came from.
That habit is the idea behind Infernal Paradise, the book of shadows we are building: your book lives beside a shared library, and you take a whole section from another witch into your book, credited to them and yours to rewrite. There is a sample of how that works on our home page.
Start tonight, small
Open whatever you chose, make the three sections, and write one entry: a correspondence you used this week and why. That is a book of shadows. Everything else is that same act, repeated.
Infernal Paradise is built and run by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how a small studio keeps guides like this one current.
